Berkelium

... was discovered (according to Wikipedia) in December 1949 at the University of California's Radiation Laboratory – now known as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It was named not after the college, nor even the laboratory, but after the city that the laboratory is located in – Berkeley (of course).
